If you’re determined to date more than one man at a time, you might want to take notes so you don’t ask about the wrong hobby or job.

Looking at herself objectively in the mirror, Sarah Anne analyzed her outfit. She was wearing a violet jogging set and a pair of white Keds that she’d bedazzled with rhinestones on a whim several weeks ago. She’d put on mascara and pale pink lip gloss, and on impulse, she’d heated up her hot rollers and rolled her hair. They were on her head now, working their magic. The heat would calm her somewhat wiry hair and give it a little extra bounce that blow-drying alone couldn’t accomplish.

Looking back at her reflection, she nodded. She would do. It wasn’t a first-date-worthy effort, but all things considered, she thought she looked pretty good. Good enough to share a delivery pizza with Pete.

And certainly better than the state of her living room!

It was a mess! She had an awful habit of taking off her socks and shoes in front of the television at the end of a long day. Sometimes, she took off all her jewelry and placed it on a side table as well. And, on occasion, she would leave the glass or cup from whatever she had been drinking there, too. And wrappers from candy. Forgotten tissues. Magazines she’d read but hadn’t put away. Mail she’d sorted through but had forgotten about.

It was more than a mess. It was a disaster!

There was no way she was going to let Pete see all of that.

More quickly than she thought was possible to move after the day she’d had, Sarah Anne scurried around the house, picking up everything in handfuls and depositing them in the trash, the dishwasher, and the cabinets. Two squirts of furniture polish and a damp rag removed the worst of the dust.

Right after she’d sprayed air freshener throughout the entire living room, the doorbell rang. She quickly deposited the spray bottle in her media cabinet, then opened the door to Pete.

His polite smile turned into a full-fledged grin when he saw her. “I’m flattered.”

“Why is that?” She led him into her living room, quickly scanning the entryway as she did so. Everything looked good and smelled even better. The room was reasonably neat, too. No stray socks or—heaven help her—undergarments that had fallen when she’d raced to put the clothes sitting on the top of her dryer into the basket in her closet.

Looking as if he was trying his hardest not to burst into laughter, he pointed to her hair. “Your curlers.”

Though she could already feel them, Sarah Anne still reached up to touch them. Just in case he was making it up.

But, of course, he wasn’t.

She. Still. Had. Hot. Rollers. In. Her. Hair.

She closed her eyes in mortification. “I’ll be right back.”

He chuckled. “Take your time.” Pulling out his cell phone, he said, “I’ll order the pizza. What kind do you want?”

“Anything is fine.”

“ ‘Anything’? Are you sure?”

She nodded. “I like anything but sausage, ham, peppers, or pineapple.
